Rowan Lim

Rowan Lim is a visual storyteller, with a focus as a Director of Photography. On film sets, they are also a gaffer and camera-operator. They also have experience and skills in photography and producing as well as developed a comprehensive understanding of filmmaking roles through BU undergraduate degree and their personal projects. What makes Rowan stand out is their creative visual style and technical knowledge in all things camera and lighting as well as their pragmatic problem-solving approach and collaborative leadership. Rowan shapes visual language based on story while adding to the director’s vision using a meticulous pre-production process, which allows visual intention to shine through and sets to be conducted efficiently. Rowan is a big advocate of experimentation and pushing creative boundaries in camera framing, shot coverage, camera movement and lighting while maintaining efficiency on set. Rowan emphasizes curiosity, consistent practice, organized workflow, work ethic, reliability and attention to detail and communication.

Rowan is familiar with multiple light sources including Aputure and other LED lights like the Nanlite and HMI and tungsten lights and using a variety of lighting modifiers and lighting support. Rowan is familiar with setting up and operate the Chapman Pee Wee dolly (including laying out track), Dana dolly, Jib arm, and have experience using easyrig, shoulder-rig, fly-cam and gimbal.

As someone who had to follow a conventional academic path before making a pivot to filmmaking and cinematography, Rowan is driven to encourage other people to work hard to pursue their dreams in creative fields. Rowan is also fiercely determined to bring representation to marginalized communities as well as teach important life lessons through their artistic work. Both goals involve being the best version of themselves, not only through the final product, but through the collaborative process and bringing out the story, nuanced characters, relationships and messages of the film.

Rowan is a rising senior at BU and is currently based in Boston/MA, hoping to move to New York by Fall 2027. Rowan is keen to collaborate and available to travel! Please reach out!
